Frances McInnes, owner of a successful Breastmates talks about how she started a home business in the hope it can inspire other mothers. The company that created Frances, Breastmates, fills a niche for pregnant women and lactating mothers, providing products they may need when they breastfeed baby. The site Breastmates currently receives about 19,000 unique visitors per month (May 2009).

Here's what Frances had to say during our interview:

"My company began after humble beginnings. In the absence of capital investment or the experts, it took about four years to grow from zero and all this has been "tinkering". I am proud that I am able to provide "breastfeeding for the masses" and make consumer advertising, and show that breastfeeding is normal. "

When I had my first son in 2004 I started making washable nursing pads to use for myself rather than buying disposable products to save money. I gave my prenatal classes and sold a few extra pairs on auction sites only because I had leftover fabric instead. They have all been snapped up so I kept them to earn some cash, our family had been reduced to a single income.

It was a fluke that I chose the name "Breastmates" as Today the name of my brand encompasses everything and do not limit myself to just breast pads.

At that time I did not realize fully the potential of what I did and who dreamed of being a WAHM (work at home Mom).

I brought a domain name for $ 40, and then found free hosting. I only had a small amount of web traffic at the time for him to cope. We did not even a printer – I used to write receipts in a carbon-copy pad type received!

When my son was approximately 6 months, I went to a local baby store to inquire about breast pumps. The lady at the shop could not really answer my questions and I left the store feeling more confused than when I went in.

I'm back and thinking from …….. he was my light bulb moment …… and here we are with Breastmates Specialty Breastfeeding Store.

I started training products and have qualified myself be an expert in the inventory that I sell. One of the key points for business customers from my shop is that I am a mother too, and actually use the products I sell.

Plus I also know it can be difficult to go shopping for baby gear when you are heavily pregnant or with a very young infant, or dragging around too so that's why I now have such a range of products. Everything, since bras maternity, breast pumps and nursing clothes, etc.

I now have two children, who have developed around Company. Both are boys, but they are very skilled in Boobies when they grow up!

With hindsight, I would never had the courage, confidence or capital to jump in and do it. Then, his ideal was that I was able to grow slowly and really understand my market and customer needs.

I absolutely love what I do, and how my life has changed.

What's next to Breastmates? And with well over 64,000 children born in New Zealand in 2008, we have a big market to fill.
