Altered Clothing
$16.93 Offers hip, DIY readers ideas for turning existing or vintage clothes into custom fashions |
|
|
Altered Clothing
$19.48 A treasure for sewers, crafters, and creative fashionistas.Sewing, like all of domestic arts, is experiencing a renaissance of interest, especially for the "DIY Generation". This new and growing group strives for individuality and the satisfaction of wearing custom garments that make a personal statement. Altered Clothing is a collection of ideas and projects that provide the resources and inspiration for creating personal fashion from existing, used, and vintage clothing and fabrics. Rather than having to discard a favorite pair of jeans because they just are worn through or are cut wrong, this book provides creative redesigns. Rather than buy new mass produced fashions, it is easy and economical to take what you already have in your closet and create not only a fashion statement, but a political statement. With knowledge of some basic sewing technique (barely necessary with today's available technology), anyone can turn old clothing into new favorites with a little creative inspiration and embellishment. So simple that even basic mending tasks can become fashion opportunities. |

Principles of Social Reconstruction
$34.48 "The supreme principle, both in politics and in private life, should be to promote all that is creative, and so to diminish the impulses and desires that center round possession." This book, originally entitled Why Men Fight, is generally seen as the fullest expression of Bertrand Russell's political philosophy. Russell argues that after the experience of the Great War the individualistic approach of traditional liberalism had reached its limits. Political theory must be based on the motivated forces of creativity and impulse rather than on competition. The ideas expressed in Principles of Social Reconstruction have greatly contributed to Russell's fame as a social critic and anti-war activist. The introduction by Richard Rempel locates them in the context of Russell's other writings and show that neither his ideas nor his language have lost their force and topicality over the years. |

The Reconstruction of American Liberalism, 1865-1914
$29.95 Tracing the transformation of liberal political ideology from the end of the Civil War to the early twentieth century, Nancy Cohen offers a new interpretation of the origins and character of modern liberalism. She argues that the values and programs associated with modern liberalism were formulated not during the Progressive Era, as most accounts maintain, but earlier, in the very different social context of the Gilded Age. Integrating intellectual, social, cultural, and economic history, Cohen argues that the reconstruction of liberalism hinged on the reaction of postbellum liberals to social and labor unrest. As new social movements of workers and farmers arose and phrased their protests in the rhetoric of democratic producerism, liberals retreated from earlier commitments to an expansive vision of democracy. Redefining liberal ideas about citizenship and the state, says Cohen, they played a critical role in legitimating emergent corporate capitalism and politically insulating it from democratic challenge. As the social cost of economic globalization comes under international critical scrutiny, this book revisits the bitter struggles over the relationship between capitalism and democracy in post-Civil War America. The resolution of this problem offered by the new liberalism deeply influenced the progressives and has left an enduring legacy for twentieth-century American politics, Cohen argues. |
