ethics of offering incentives for charitable acts?
A feature of the weekly New York Times Magazine is a column by Randy Cohen, called "The Ethicist," in which people raise ethical questions that Cohen gives answers. The question below is the column that appeared April 4, 2003. To my school, various clubs and organizations sponsor charity drives, ask students to bring money, food and clothing. Some teachers offer bonus points on tests and final averages as incentives to participate. Some parents believe that this sends a morally wrong message, undermining the value of charity as a selfless act. Is the exchange of donations for grades OK? The practice of offering incentives for charitable acts is widespread, school projects for readers to fund organizations such as public television stations, the federal government to tax deductions for contributions to charities. what are your thoughts?
Here are my thoughts. Do you want the doctor who examines you to be where he or she is in part because the biology teacher has given additional points for participation in an activity totally unrelated to biology? Do you want the architect who designed the house that you live to get points additional class of physical karting on a platform of canned chili? The allocation of bonus points in class for activities that have no related to the subject is stupid. I want my doctor to get an A or B in biology because he or she earned that rank by the work of course. I do not want my doctor for an A or B because he or she has donated money to a school or charity campaign helped clean the classroom a once a week.
