German teachers and students are always on the lookout for interesting ways to present lessons or improve vocabulary. This DVD series may be a useful resource. The vocabulary is simple, and episodes are only 52 minutes.

Manni 'Nonni und' is a 2 * * Region DVD production released in 1988. If you do not have a DVD player capable of playing Region 2 titles, go to A-Language-Guide.com and browse the "Tips" or access to information at videohelp.com. Multi-region compatible DVD players are available from your retailer Wal-Mart for very reasonable prices. Just a few clicks of the remote and your DVD drive will be able to play DVDs from anywhere in the world.

The Original "Nonni und Manni TV Series' was produced in Iceland – which is a Germanic language of the Nordic group. German production was well-known audio, spoken clearly to an easy to understand pace. There are no idioms and dialects accents to treat. Intermediate to advanced students should be able to understand speech (which, incidentally, has no subtitles).

The "Nonni und Manni series is based on characters children's books written by Jon Svensson. Adults also benefit from the scenario.

The Plot:

1869: Nonni and Manni live near a small village on the coast of Iceland with their mother (Sigrid) and grandmother. Their father boarded a ship headed to abroad before 8-year-old Mann was born and the family was awaiting his return.

One day a stranger named Harald comes ashore with the sad news that Nonni and Manni father died. The family begins the mourning process, and Harald help on their farm in exchange for board. The boys form a bond with him, and begin to regard him as a father figure. A local businessman, who is very fond of Sigrid, becoming increasingly angry at the situation.

A wealthy farmer in the village is murdered. Harald is blamed for the incident, and decides to flee to the mountains. Nonni and Manni are determined to help keep safe and to prove his innocence. With the help of a friend, they locate a secure hiding place.

As might be expected any 12-year-old, Nonni prepares several trips to the hiding place with his little brother. They are endangered by doing so, and the story progresses, with life several calls threatening to close.

Other Information:

The magnificent beauty of Iceland has been the scene in this series. Production techniques in the mid-1980s did not use special effects like CGI graphics. The scenes of attack of polar bears are a bit unrealistic – but the suspense is maintained, despite everything.

The background music is beautiful, with a distinctive melancholy edge. The song theme, "Ocean" is in English – which seems to be the case with many foreign series. Costumes seem to be well informed. Boys wear wool suits that appear large irregular and bumpy, as you would expect from handmade clothes. Hats and headgear of women are certainly something you will not see a film in North American West.
