Hurricane season is fast approaching for those of us who live in Florida. With it, the risk of high winds and floods that can do much damage to our homes. It's time to dust off kit supply disaster and make sure they are full of all the supplies you need, and make sure your family knows what to do if a hurricane.

Your Family Disaster Plan

A disaster plan is simply a plan of action you will take if a hazard affects your home and family. It includes activities to prepare you before the risk becomes one threat and activities that you might need to do during a storm or other emergency.

• Determine types of hazards that you may be affected by, and how your home is most vulnerable. Discover some ways you can minimize the risk of damage or threats to safety during a storm.
• Check your insurance policy and make sure you're covered for flood damage a kind of insurance (homeowner standard rarely covers floods).
• Take CPR classes, first aid and disaster preparedness.
• Locate rooms or areas of your home that are safe from dangers of hurricanes. In general, this will be a room inside which has no windows.
• Determine escape routes from your home (these may vary depending on risk) and select one or more meeting places where your family can meet if separated.
• Plan what to do with your pets if you must evacuate your home.
• Choose a person to contact a friend or family member who lives out of state-that family members can contact if necessary. Make sure you have at least two ways to communicate with that person (such as email, phone home cell).
• Create and maintain a supply kit in case of disaster, and make sure your family knows where it is and what it is.
• Check your supply kit in case of disaster when a hurricane watch is issued and make sure you have all necessary supplies on hand.
• Discuss these questions with your family to ensure everyone understands what to do during a storm.

Creating a Disaster Supply Kit

A kit supply disaster is full of all things you might need if a storm did enough damage that you lose your electricity supply or isolate themselves from the rest of the world.

When creating and maintaining Disaster Supply Kit, it is important to ensure that everything goes in the kit stays in it. Do not be tempted remove items from the package for any reason, it is far too easy to forget to replace them. (Of course, you can use your own discretion deciding whether to purchase items such as blankets, pillows and clothing specifically for the kit.)
What should you include?

• Plenty of water-a good rule of thumb is one gallon per person per day, with a value of at least three days for each person in the household.
• Enough food for three to seven days. Include only non-perishables such as canned or dehydrated, and also add some utensils plastic and paper plates, and a can opener and utensils.
• First Aid Kit
• Toiletries and Personal Care
• Blankets and pillows
• Clothes
• Battery operated flashlight and radio, and many spare batteries
• Books and toys for you and the children
• Important documents, including insurance policies, social security and bank account numbers, marriage and birth certificates. Remember to document in a waterproof sleeve.
• Tools (battery or hand)
• Care pet items for all pets you have, including a leash and muzzle for dogs and a cage or carrier for small animals servants.

You may also want to get their hands on items that you may need emergency repairs if the windows and appliances are broken during a storm.

Some items, like prescription drugs and documents will not be part of your supply kit disaster at any time, but you can collect these items when you hear of a Hurricane Watch and add to the kit.

Some items may need to be replaced periodically even if you do the kit includes batteries and may include first aid and food supplies.

What should you do when a hurricane watch is issued?

If a hurricane watch was issued for your area, your shares will depend on whether or not you must evacuate your home.

If you are able to stay in your home, assemble your kit supply disaster and check all the elements that must be replaced. Fill up all the supplies you need, fill your car with gas, and catch extra cash (in case ATMs and banks to close). Making your company plan, notify your contact person of the hurricane warning, and see your neighbors, too. If a hurricane do, collect your family in the room safe for your home and your supply kit in case of disaster.

If you've been ordered to evacuate places, or live in a vulnerable area, you will need to decide on a destination and to inform family and friends (including your out-of-State Contact) when you move. Evacuate the home of family members or friends in a safe place if possible, or try a motel or hotel in a safe place. Shelters will be usually a last resort, as these may be uncomfortable, and many do not accept animals.

One of the worst feelings in the family and friends are not able to reach you and I know you well. Decide on an out of state contact and let your family and friends know in advance who it is and how to reach them.

Assemble your kit supply disaster, take care of your pet, take the money additional full tank of your car and your home safe.
